Is it really worth building a Facebook page and liking back to your site? My sites are for carpet cleaning and auto insurance.

Your sites are in a list of several million other sites.
No matter what you do, you're going to have a hard time getting ranked ...
There are just too many of them.

Try getting linked on sites local to your area ... that might be best.
Local online directories, other business, commerce sites, Better Business Bureau, etc.

Facebook is too wierd because of the "invite" aspect.
Advertising on posts/walls might not come across very well.

I think you should have a Facebook page, and Twitter and all the rest of them. Not that I've got mine sorted yet.

I've just been to a few seminars on social media marketting and there are a few key points that I think apply.

    1. Its FREE so your not going to waste anything other than time on it.

    2. People trust social networks and as such will beleive what they read on social networks more than what they read on your official site.

    3. Anyone that signs up as a fan or member of your group is actually interested in your products / service and much more likely to buy from you.

    Just my 2 cents.

    Medlington,

Interesting comment #2. The trust factor. I never thought of that. I also just finished a social media seminar. I am definitely convinced that a business owner should set up facebook, twitter and linked in. Appreciate the feedback.

The backlinks from Facobook do count towards your SEO rankings in Google which is always a good thing.

Really depends on whether you think you can get the attention of your target market on there.

I am pretty sure that there is a no follow on Facebook links so I dont think it would be beneficial in a ranking way but hey, listen, you are a business and simply said any kind of networking is good practice and should always be considered if it best serves you and your product and/or service.
Obviously be sure to keep all vital information about the business on you sn pages to a minimum.
    Good Luck
    Alan
