This may sound stupid, but is the PNG image format more suitable for bitmapped or vector graphics?
I mean, I know that it's originally designed for bitmap (raster graphics), but was wondering whether it can also support vectorial?

Bitmap. It was developed to replace the gif. Your question is pretty in depth actually. You can add vector info to a png through a png extension, but why would be the question. You can convert a vector to a png using a program. If you're designing in Illustrator it will convert a vector to a png. Are you looking for conversion or were you just curious.

In short, it will not support vector but it can be converted, then it's really not a vector once you convert it!

There is a ton of info on the web.

just make sure with your .png's that if you have a background that is not filled then it will become transparent within the application you are using it in

I've heard that widespread adoption of .png has been slow, though. Is there still a large enough percentage of people surfing the Internet that don't have png-friendly browsers that it's an issue?
