So, I've got like a road sign that has several signs which are supposed to be buttons to pages. Those are some sort of polygons with four sides. I'd like them to change appearance on hover. What would be the best way to implement this? They are not rectangular or horizontally straight.

Can you give us a link to the actual URL so we can see the image you have mapped?

My thought is that you will need to use Flash instead of HTML mapping.
But I want to see it first.

I don't have the image with me right now, but it's one of these street signs that I'm using.

Mine has those signs pointing to a bit different directions but the idea is the very same. And the point is that I don't want to use flash to build up this site. So I could use xhtml, css, probably javascript too of course.

And that's a bit stupid to change the whole big image on rollover, at least with the first load.

    Here's an interesting idea ....

If fails with IE6.0 because of the PNG transparency issue,
but I think you could get around that.

I would consider using jQuery and CSS. Place your individual signs using absolute positioning where you want them and than add the roll over affect using a jquery script.

here is a post on how to achieve the image roll-over affect with jquery..

    I hope this helps.
