yer first vote. woo hoo.
i think first impressions. when i am designing a new site i like to minimize the window and then maximize it. if i get scared and head for the hills when i see the design then i know i have to restart it.

Why did you make me choose just 1there are so many important factors you cant just do 1 thing and say ok its a good website u gotta have all the good things
. But id say the main functions are first impression, easy to understand, and some good content.

None of the above / All of the above... it really depends on the TYPE of website.
A news site would be CONTENT.
A search engine would be SIMPLE TO UNDERSTAND
A resource site would be FUNCTIONAL
A commerce site would be FIRST IMPRESSIONS (market appeal)
A design company site would be FLASH FLASH FLASH!
Of course, the most important OVERALL factor would probably be CONTENT... without it, all you have is a framework.
The site must have good content, be quick to download, be simple to navigate and be easy on the eye in terms of colours and text. But number one is content.

its all of the above for me, if they had that choice....
but i say the layout is first, only if the website is about html/graphics/flash or anything professional, people look for flashy sites (not 100% true) but thats what i do, if a site looks nice i would start reading the content of it....

I agree that all of these are important, and I also think that some are very similar. Easy to Navigate, Simple to Understand and Layout are all related, and the whole list is what forms your First Impression. However, Content is the meat of the site, so after all is said and done, no content --> no site.
"Simple to understand" is quite important for many.
And the navigation would also be included in the category.
I have contents on my site but I don't know if my visitors know where to start off? =/
Simple to understand is the most important. If I don't know what's going on, I'm going to move on.
