    Hi all,

A friend of mine has an idea for a website, and he asked if I could give him a hand in starting it. I've had some web design experience in the past, mostly html and php websites and some experience with custom code in Wordpress and Joomla. However, I am by no means very experienced nor do I have tons of time. The idea for the website (for the record, no, it is not a porn site) bases income on a monthly subscription. Does anybody know of an already existing CMS type thing that can securely process credit cards, etc. and manage monthly users? A free, open source program is, of course, optimal.

    Thank you in advance!

I don't know what CMS will do that if any (I doubt any will, to be totally honest with you), but depending on what your friend's monthly subscription site is about, you may want to look at Authorize.NET's API for that. I've used it in the past and it actually does a pretty good job of automatically rebilling customers at the appropriate interval.

Mind you, if this is any kind of MLM site or something where the subscription relies on some sort of pyramid sales or anything like that, they won't take your friend on (never mind porn). This will also make finding a CMS that much more difficult, because not only will it have to integrate with a payment processor, but it will also have to integrate with a payment processor that actually allows whatever your friend is selling. So...what is your friend selling?

Its not an MLM or anything like that, its an idea he had for a social networking type site, but in the interest of not throwing his idea out to all the world I'm not going to go into much more detail. Thank you for the link, I will look more into that!

Hmmm...well, if it's social networking, then it's hard to say. That depends on how much of a gak factor is involved.

Gak factor = how many customers buy or order a service online and then claim they didn't do it to get out of paying for the bill. This usually applies to porn, but can apply to other service-based websites as well.

All major cms's have some sort of paid membership plugin available, but most of the good plugins are not free. I have found a few free ones, with varied degrees of usability.
    Peace, Mike

Can you link me to a CMS/plugin (preferably a free one)? I've googled a bit but didn't find much useful ones.

You haven't told us which CMS you are using. Plugins tend to be specific to a particular CMS. I could Google all day and send you links to what i find, but unless they are for the CMS you are using, it would be a waste of my time.

I don't think he has the CMS either. I think he's saying he wants both.

Exactly, I was looking for a good CMS/plugin combination to do this.

    Here is your solution:

    Use Drupal/MySQL as the CMS
Use UberCart 2.0 as the plugin
    Include Authorize.net plugin for Ubercart
    Include recurring_payments module for Ubercart

You now have a social networking site which can take recurring payments! Keep in mind that the maintenance cost will be around 60-100/month for the credit card processing services with recurring billing, but everything else is free and open source.

There is some setup required on the Drupal side, but it isn't too hard, and shouldn't require any custom coding.

    Good luck!
