Don't use tables to lay your site out use CSS.
When designing a site don't need to go all crazy, think about the user and usability first
It's not about not using technology it's how you use it so don't just use it for using it because it new or cool
You don't need to reinvent the wheel when designing

i cannot stress the importance of what i am about to type, please do not put giant flashing images on your site, it may have been cool when the internet started but now it just serves as a distraction

-don't just go with what you like, always get at least 2 other opinions
-don't design a website that needs to scroll horizontallly
(some off the top of my head!)
-don't have 3 menu navigational bars (one: top right in size 8pt font, two: As the main Navigation menu, three: middle bottom in size 10pt font!)

Good points but on the 'Use a domain name that says what your site does' front, I was wondering if you have any as successful as:
Google, Yahoo, twitter, bebo, ebay, amazon...... not exactly clear are they, still doin alright (apart from bebo - my space and facebook are a bit clearer... I'll give you that)

Here are a few of my favourite DONTS:-
- DONT use animated GIFs...they are tacky people!!
- If you can, avoid having a site that needs to scroll vertically and DEFINATELY DONT have a site that scrolls horizontally...there is nothing worse!
-DONT go for a free hosting server...the adds and popups they place on your site scream amature!
- Again if you can, avoid using primary colours as a complete colour scheme...it just doesnt work well!
