I would like to add a custom 404 error page to a website I'm working on.

This website will be added to my school's website so, as far as I understand, I can't just create a .htaccess file to make the 404 redirect page because it would affect the whole school website.

Is there a way to make the website redirect to a certain page if there is an error without editing a .htaccess file?

I was thinking of some type of php redirect script, but I'm not sure what would work.

    Ideas?

That's usually a server setting. Depending on your host or the server platform, you can redirect it to a specific page that you create, and then point the 404 error to it. Some ISPs have this in their settings as an option on their control panels. If you don't have access to these settings, you'll need to create the page. Then contact your server admin and the them the full path to the page.

If you are using any kind of scripting language on the site, you probably want to create a custom 500 error page as well. I've created several over the years that call a mail script when a 500 error happens, then it emails me the error so I can investigation and resolve the error before many people experience it.
