Hi, my name is mat and I'm new to the forum. I've come up with a good idea for a website That I'd like to make happen as quickly as possible, but I don't know the first thing about how to make a website. Basically, I would need to have it set up similarly to a facebook or myspace-like style where each user would have a profile where their files (uploaded, not local files) are viewable by others. The files accessibility would also need to be able to be specified by the owner of the file as well- personal record only, viewable by certain specified members, or viewable by all members/nonmembers. I would also need "search file by title" and "search file by keyword" with "filter out keyword" functionality on files uploaded that would not show the user what his account wasn't given permission to see. My question is, how involved of a process does the basic gist of my website sound to you guys? Also, how much should I expect to pay to have it up and running? I've never done a site before, so any advice you can give is greatly appreciated

Let's see, both Facebook and myspace have hundreds of designers/developers and millions of dollars in infrastructure ( servers, networks, bandwidth ) in place to handle the traffic.

No they didn't start that way, and yes something could be created similar on a smaller scale, but for all the functionality you're seeking, you should at least have some basic understanding of how this works.

As for price, that will all depend on the skill levels of your developer and time frame involved. You'll probably find many that would and could do this particular project, but depending on if you want to have it up and running in 6 months or a year there will be a large variance in price.

    There's the "pick two" rule:
"Fast - Good - Cheap; pick any two"

For what you're thinking of you're going to need extensive databases and search functionality, serious security, and scalability (I know that's a buzzword but it happens to apply in this case). If you're looking at one person for the job, expect it to take a good long time - this is not a two-week project.
If you go with a team, then the time should be shorter but the cost may well be higher.

It may do you some good to take a look around places like oDesk and see what kinds of projects may be similar in scope to yours and what they are pricing at.
