Hey guys, first post here because I need some guidance so please bare with me . I'll try to make this short and sweet. I want to develop a website for people to share personal stories in their lives based on certain topics. Currently I'm looking for wordpress themes that can incorporate what I'm looking for.
    I'm looking to have:
-a very large list of topics for people to give input on
-membership is required to post input on a topic
-All the input posted on a topic is posted on a single page underneath a summary of the topic.

I've got the domain and hosting with hostgator. I've got wordpress set up right now and I'm looking for a theme to use but I cant really find anything that fits what I'm looking for. I'm also open to other platforms like Joomla or Drupal. If anyone can recommend resources that might be able to help me, or have any experience with something similar, I would very much appreciate it. Thanks guys!

Based on what you've posted, I haven't a clue what you're looking for either.

A lot of what you mentioned would really be " topic" based, and the target market you're looking for for visitors / writers .

Worpress has a lot of functionality, and you can probably make it work for your purposes... Just make "static" pages for each of your topics.. I'd leave the moderator function in place to make sure the article/ story gets posted in the appropriate section.

As far as look and feel, that's all personal opinion... Again, depending on the subject matter and target market some themes will be more appropriate than others.

What is your expected "growth"... As a site like this could become very popular, very quickly depending on many factors... If you expect it to grow fast, I'd personally go with something not word press... No offense intended, Wordpress has its place, and for a niche site, would probably be usable for sometime.

You've always gotta keep in mind, a site has to cater to many different levels. 1 the visitors just viewing, 2. The writers , 3. The search engines. If the site fails on any of them, well... Don't expect it to be around very long.

I'm assuming you chose WordPress because it will make it easy for people to register and submit content?
It will work well for that, but make sure you keep it updated to prevent it from getting hacked.

Since nobody seems to want to address the actual question -

I will recommend a couple of places you can look for good themes.
Themeforest - individually priced themes - make sure you read the comments because not all of the authors are good about support
Elegantthemes - membership site - you get as many themes as you want for one price
ThemesKingdom - membership site - similar to Elegantthemes

Now, I will advise you to look into securing your WP site as much as possible before asking people to post. Start with a manual install, using a unique database name and changing the table prefix, once all is installed, move your config file, etc. Some good reading on that topic can be found HERE and HERE.

I didn't see it the first time it was asked...two months ago.

As far as any other thoughts are concerned, my only real issue would be putting it on HostGator. After the bot runaround I've had with their merry band of support "professionals", I wouldn't recommend them for anything.

I've got to remember to read the dates...
Actually, I'm getting sick of people not reading the questions, not answering the questions, and posting opinions as if they are answers to questions, especially when they are not asked for. Also I am feeling extremely grumpy in general.

You should try the Joomla, it is an open source CMS. It is chosen by many world-wide as the CMS platform for their Website or blog.

This is an open source social networking website CMS.

I'm sure you can easily add what you want to it, I've never used it before, but I've heard of it.
