If you have a shared webhost (like most normal online webhost accounts),
you have to make your own screenshots and thumbnails .. then upload them.

To do them "on the fly" requires your own server and your own webhost. It takes
software within the server to do a screenshot, make the image, and render
it on the browser "on the fly". That is something that PHP nor javascripting can do.

Alternatively, there are services you can subscribe (or pay for) that will do it
for you. In this method, you are relying on them to provide the thumbs at any
time. If they have a crash or have a problem, your webpage will have red [X] boxes
    where the images should be.

    Like this:
    http://www.shrinktheweb.com/

    or:
    http://www.websnapr.com/

You use their services (free isn't really free). Try them out and see what it does.
They will have watermarks on the thumbs unless you pay for the service.

I had a plugin on a Joomla site that did it with a shared server. Each time I created a link, it created a thumb nail of the site home page. I have no way of knowing what code it used. I can't figure out what to search to get any code I can copy or download.
