    Hi,

I'm having a disagreement with my colleague about what we should put on our home page. We predominantly create 3D graphics and animations and have a main slider that displays images from these.

Basically I want to put some big overlay text over the images that states what we do / our services etc. So we would have a nice rendering of a building and it would say 'architectural rendering', '3d fly-throughs' etc. which would make it instantly obvious what we do.

My colleague however thinks that it is fine to just put these services in a bullet pointed list underneath to the right. You can see what I mean here:

My opinion is that our services should be shouted at the viewer rather than half hidden away and the viewer will have to search for them. Also we can put the specific services ontop of a relevant picture rather than just have a long list of services some of which wont be relevant to the others such as web design and print design to 3D animation.

He thinks the quality of the images should sell themselves and the user will then be drawn into reading the text.

What do you guys think? anyone done any research into things like this?

    Thanks

I think I'm with you on this one.
You can have nice text on those images ... take the Asus Laptop for example.
There is a lot of room on the right of that to tell about the rendering you do.
A clean font (san serif), not too large, but easy to read in the time that the
    photo is visible.

Do it both ways on a test page and decide.

Overlay the text on the images. That way, you both get what you want.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

We've had to come to a compromise which is pretty much what TheGame suggested, I've overlayed the text and he wants it so its only visible on rollover but I may conveniently not be able to figure out how to do that

    http://www.medlington.co.uk/atumtest/index.php

the majority of the images we'll be using wont have as much empty space around them as the few that I had up there to test with so this kind of works better in the end and it should be much better for SEO too.

DOH!! thatl teach me to play with a new framework. It seems to be ok now though so maybe it was a database connection issue. Still I should have a fallback incase it happens again.

Did you get that from just clicking the link or did you try to navigate to a different area of the site?

    luckily its not live yet.

Thanks for the heads up mate
