I use Komodo right now which is a free editor. I am writing Spanish content for a website in my html document and whenever I preview it in any browser the accented letters are replaced with blank symbols and squares.

Accents have always displayed fine when I write them in WordPress pages, so what's the difference here? How can I fix it?

    Thanks
    Sean

You need to HTML encode your Spanish characters. I'm not sure why WordPress encoded them other than if you were using a WYSIWYG editor, it may have been done for you automatically.
