    Design Help -- overlapping sidebar?

Hi everyone, I hope this is the right place to post this. I'm just starting out with web design, and while I don't know a whole town, I'm pretty good at learning quickly if I'm pointed in the right direction.

Right now, I am working on this theme:

Social Media Condensed ? A Social Media Management Company

for my blog, Clarks Condensed ? (the design is terrible right now, just testing it on the other site first.)

As you can see, I haven't done a lot, as I'm waiting for my graphic designer to send me a few files. What I am wanting to do is this. I want a layout similar to this, with the sidebar appearing to be underneath the the main content area. But, I'd like the sidebar to be on the leftside.

{nifty thrifty things} ? creating nifty, thrifty and creative things

I'd like the header to have a more curved though, like this one:

Raspberry Banana Bread - Whats Cooking Love?

I'm pretty sure I can figure out the header easily, but I'm wondering if anyone has tips on how to get the desired effect, as is in the first link I referenced? I'm not totally sure where to even begin searching for a tutorial on things like this.

Thank you for any help in advance

They are doing this by creating background images with the overlaps drawn onto the image itself ...
The content is just put on top of the background.

An OK way to do it. It looks nice and renders good.

    Here is the header:

Here is the content ... that keeps extending down as needed:

And then they close the bottom with a footer:
