What should I be looking for (contractor-wise) for interactive animation?

    Hi everyone,

What type of contractor or what type of technology should I be looking for to do a particular interactive page?

A client of mine wants to make the front page of their website interactive. They want to be able to move a character around and surf with it (the client didn't give me the best description, but it's going to be interactive and fun for kids).

Whatever the solution is, I don't know the technology. I am usually open to learning new technology, but at the moment, I am a bit backed up because I am wanting to put together a niche website and also to study more on Google's online ads program. So, I am looking to hire somebody for this project.

What technology or language would we be working with? Flash is a no-go. Lots of kids will be using the Apple tablet to look at it and since iPads don't support Flash (but favor HTML5), Flash is not an option. HTML5 can do some animations as well. I saw a demo of a airplane shooter game using HTML5. Or is there another technology out there that can do this stuff? Canvas? Would love to hear your thoughts.

    Thank you.

When all else fails, borrow from kids' shows.

    Toopy and Binoo

They use Flash for their desktop version. I'm not sure what they do for tablets and phones, if anything.

I know that king.com creates a separate app for each device type they're targeting and that they use Flash for desktops, so that's another way to go about it.

I think what you'd be looking for is an app developer at any rate.

So I'm guessing that your kids are around 4 to 7 years old and like animated cartoons :-D.

I took a look at the website on my mobile emulators...

It seems they post a "coming soon" picture for certain devices or if there's no flash detected or however they went about it.

I definitely think HTML5 would be a better idea, don't you? I'm not sure how much more expensive it would be because it may be harder to program than Flash... but it seems that it would be a cheaper method instead of make multiple versions to suit everyone.

Also, I didn't know this, but HTML5 has some cool effects and capabilities: .: WASTE INVADERS - HTML5 EDITION :.

Anyway, thanks. I'm going to start looking for app developers and gauge how much they charge.

    She's two...but not a bad guess.

I think it may be a better idea. I think there's an argument for it, I think there's an argument for Flash, I think there's an argument for app development, and I think there's an argument for some combination of all three. It really depends on what / who they try to target.

For example, if they already have an active site and it gets a lot of IE8/7 usage, you may be limited with HTML5, but you can do pretty much everything with Flash. And if you want to target tablets on top of that, you go to app development.
