    What's with this "retro" design

I receive several design newsletters - and lately all they have been full of is links to download "retro" vectors, icons, backgrounds, etc.

"Retro" in this case usually means beige or tan backgrounds with teal, aqua, dull rose accents, and hand-lettered-looking text. Also lots of swirls, curly-Q's and ribbons.

Is this style really getting to be popular? Or is this just an attempt by some designers to make it seem as if it is, they can sell these items?

Personally, I don't much care for it - but then I don't much care for "flat design" either - I guess I'm a bit of a dinosaur, I'm still stuck really liking the shiny, 3D, "web 2.0" stuff...

    Opinions, anyone?

Am I detecting a little bit of "retro" happening here? http://www.alphamare.ca/

I've been seeing a lot of retro themes myself ... like these:
20+ Creative Retro WordPress Themes | NowThemeNowTheme

I don't think it's a good or bad thing, it's just gaining popularity for now. By next year, it will be something different. In my opinion, it is sort of nice to see something different for a change. Then I suppose I'll get sick of it until the next "in" design happens.

Maybe you want to use a "horse" theme like this? My Little Pony Love

Alphamare site - not so much retro as defunct LOL ... I haven't done a thing with it in over a year!

by "retro", I mean more like this:
    Retro Portfolio

In some ways it's appealing, but it has to suit the content of the site - I would not use it for my husband's aviation consulting site, for example!

    P.S.
I'm going to be updating the alphamare site soon - stay tuned - (my little pony - NOT! LOL - it'll look more like this: still a work in progress - it's too busy - got too much stuff on the front page... I jusy don't have a lot of time right now so the shoemaker's kids are running around barefoot! )

A trend is a decision made by an idiot and propagated on the rest of the world. There is no correlation between a trend and whether or not it's a solid design idea.

I've seen quite a bit of it lately, but I don't pay a lot of mind to it. If it fits the site, great...if it's "retro" because it's a trend or for the sake of being "retro", I assume the designer is an uncreative yutz and give it no further thought.

I'm not that keen on the whole Retro web design myself either.

The Retro sites got started with us several years ago. We handle 100's of mom and pop's...bookstores, antique stores, burger and hotdog joints...you get the idea.

I didn't think to much of it and just went with the flow. We've had a mom and pop store we've managed since 1998 and usually do a rebuild on their site every 2 years. They came in and asked us to carry their site back to 1950's with an upcoming rebuild. I told them ok, would be no problem.

I handed the site off to our 13 year old daughter and told her to get started on this with her young and not to full mind yet and do some mind work on it and we would discuss it in a week.

She looked at me and said...mom, I don't even remember the 50's and have done no Retro anything. Retro to me would be the year 2000 so why don't one of you "old folks" do the site. We heard her aunt say ouchy...and then much laughter got started up and down the hall here in the office.

    Just some humor tonight guys.

If she's 13, then she would have been born in 2000. How is 2000 "retro" to her?

I suppose the year 2000 is her year of the Retro. She owns a Morgan horse, a mule and a Bluetick hound dog for pets and races go karts so try and figure that 13 year old mind out. Her dad and me are not messing with it lol.

Sounds like my daughter. She's 2 years old and she likes tucking a toy skeleton under the covers at night and pretending it's a doll. She also likes playing goalie while I kick beach balls at her. She's a very different little girl.
