font-family multiple fonts same browser multiple selections

I open website A and firebug shows computed font-family: x y z; The font that appears on the screen is x. I open website B and firebug shows computed font-family: x y z; The font that appears on the screen is y. All other values in computed for fonts and what-not are the same for both websites. I use the same browser, Firefox, to open both websites on the same computer.

Why does the same browser on the same computer sometimes fall back to font x and sometimes to font y?

If font X isn't installed, then it may not show up. Sometimes people install web fonts when they're building sites and serve them to the browser.
