    If the background eraser fails while set to continuous/discontiguous, then you'll just need an eraser with a hardness around 70% and a very steady hand.

    Actually, I find that the best tool for erasing backgrounds is using a mask and manually selecting areas to be deleted.

    The layer mask always you to delete the visibility of part of the image instead of deleting for real.

    Manually selecting areas is necessary because photoshop doesn't quite detect things as well as you'd like, unless there is a heavy color contrast (example: green screen background).

    Also, to start off, it's a good idea to use the wand (W) and start deleting chunks of color that you're sure are not part of your foreground object.
