    if i set a body width of 950px and margin to 0px auto, that should center the body in the middle of the page right??

    because surprise surprise its not....

    I'd create a div to do that, not the body tag. It works a lot more consistently this way.

    If you're using Internet Explorer this can be caused if you do not declare a DOCTYPE and IE as a result renders your page in Quirks mode. Try to use <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd"> for HTML 4 or <!DOCTYPE html> for HTML 5.

    I know he didn't link to the site in this post, but I assure you, he's using a doctype. And that wouldn't really change much here anyway.
