Some sort of dynamically sortable database framework?

    Hey guys!

I'm learning web design, and I figure that the best way to learn is to just start projects and learn when you run into trouble.

I have a little idea that I would like to make a website listing all rear-wheel driven cars. Maybe it sounds like a huge project, but I guess I would start with a limited time span, simplify the models and so on, and then just build from there.

Anyway, my knowledge is way to small to start this from scratch, so I will need something to start with. I would like some sort of theme or whatever, where you can add cars into a database and then sort or sort them out depending on manufacturer, year, horsepower or whatever. I would prefer it to be some sort of slider, where you can put the slider between '96-'99 in making year for example, but any kind of dynamically updating thing would work. And yes, I would also prefer it to look good from the beginning, like that you could have pictures representing the cars rather than a list. I would also love it if it would be wordpress based.

Does anyone understand what I mean and can point me in some sort of direction where to start? Thank you!

    /Klas

Install WordPress and upload the theme you wish to use. Then install this plugin:
WordPress ? Participants Database WordPress Plugins

I'm thinking that plugin, although made for a "people" database, could just as easily be used for a "car database". It would involve some customization, but the main part of it is there, already done for you. It looks like that plugin also allows files (or in your case, photos) to be uploaded as well.

The custom part would be the slider and GUI that accesses the database.

I've never used that plugin before, but it looks like it might work for you. If not, you just delete the plugin and try a different one.

The worst case scenerio is that you hire someone to program a database and UI from scratch.

Thanks for the reply mlseim, although I would prefer to start with something that is closer to what I want to accomplish.

I found this theme: Search Results - Premium Automotive WordPress Theme
    Porsche 311 - Radial

Do you think that would be a good starting point? The listing site looks close to what I'm thinking of, and I like that users are able to comment on cars. Maybe the slider and stuff like that isn't necessary from the beginning (or at all).

    So, first you say this:

    But then, this:

Do you want to learn or do you want an OOB solution? Or do you want to learn to use cookie cutter solutions? I'm a bit confused.

Ok, I can see how that sounds contrary Ronald. What I mean is that I learn things by adjusting already existing websites (and it would be quite a bit of changes to make if I should get it to the way I want it), but to build something like that from the ground up is to hard for me right now. Does that make sense?

The nice thing about WordPress and Plugins ... you can try them and if you don't like them, delete it and try a different one.
