My html file is now appearing as gibberish and I have no idea why

I am working on making my own personal website. It has 4 sections in it and yesterday I wrote the biggest section which is my portfolio. It just has some basic html and css. I finished that yesterday and it worked fine, but today when I open up the file to go back to work on it, it is completely broken. It is just all weird characters now. Here is an example of a line of it now
    HTML Code:
    ~ b)H~ v&š I6֎XKzc6XP:1͑U( j"W>b)K*_6ŤS;}ai|KahFu J7*. Nfj R}*}w23
Can I somehow save this. I don't want to have to redo a few days worth of work on it. I opened it in notepad++ which is what I used to write it yesterday. I think I may have found the issue. For some reason all of the images I have used are now saying that they are damaged or corrupted. Even though I have not been near them since yesterday when they worked. The portfolio section was full of images so I presume it is somehow connected

Have you checked your hard drive for signs of corruption or failure yet?

It would explain all the weird characters you're seeing.
