    How many ways can humans come up with to code anything? The answer is "there is no limit". The same applies here.

    Anything can be linked to for any reason in any format imaginable.

    To drill down closer to the heart of the question, what you're looking at are relative vs absolute addresses. Relative addresses are based on the location of the current document, and are used when the item you're linking to is in the same directory tree. Absolute addresses are just that. They are a location of a document irrespective of the current document. It is also possible to link to a router on the server that will collect and send a dynamically generated document. Those will look a lot like relative addresses, but may have a query string that follows.

    What I think GAME was trying to get at is that what we have now can and will change, and there are different ways of writing even the relative and absolute addresses.

    Partly. I was also getting at the fact that sooner or later, all experienced coders do things very differently. Code is like art in the sense that people end up developing their own style if they're good enough at it.

    @Busso,

    As mentioned by Ronald, dynamic images are common with PHP.

    Example:

    <img src="myphoto.php?p=321354" alt="" />

    Strange looking, isn't it?
    The image is actually created and generated with the correct content type, example: header('Content-type: image/png');

    That's why your question is too vague.
