Select is a dropdown. Datalist is a list of items you can use as a prefill for an input tag. It's like how when you search on Google and suggestions come up as you type. All Google is doing is sending each keystroke to a query script on its server and pushing the results into a datalist. It turns a regular input into a pseudo combo box.

select user have to scan a lengthy list for selecting one value. where datalist provide the values or user can provide their own value.
    select is a input type.
datalist is not a input type.

Pseudo in the sense that it isn't one.

    Search combo box on Google.
