    web sockets

so I bought two books on web sockets recently, and although I haven't read them it appears that web sockets are a relatively new thing that appears to only work with html5, if that is correct what kind of backwards compatibility issues are there, with older browsers?

    thanks

Web Sockets compatibility: Can I use... Support tables for HTML5, CSS3, etc

No, you won't use sockets in place of AJAX entirely. You can replace AJAX with sockets, but there's no reason to. Sockets are more for constant data flow-type situations. The connection will be opened with 2 way transfer capability and maintained until closed. Think HTML5-based online game, or a chat application. AJAX opens a connection, sends and waits for a response. The connection is closed once a response is received or a timeout is reached. Different use cases for both.
