Mostly to run command-line scripts. You won't use it often though, if at all. It's like the Windows command prompt, only far less useful.

I use SSH about 3-4 times a year.

I, on the other hand, use it rather frequently. I have a personal linux server at my house that I use for a plethora of different applications. It's the only way I really interact with it.

Let's say you wanted to run up a PHP development server on a particular directory using port 1337. You would navigate to the directory (usually using "cd" followed by the path to the directory).

Then, you would run up the server with a command, similar to: php -S localhost:1337

That will allow you access to that directory's contents using a PHP-based server on port 1337. So, assuming you have some kind of index.php in that directory, you could use your browser to access http:// ipaddressoftheserver :1337, which would serve the index.php.

This is one example of innumerable possible commands, depending on what you have installed on that system.

How many applications are in a plethora, and how does a plethora compare to say a smorgasbord or a cornucopia of applications? Web designers worldwide need to know.

A need that shall go unfilled. I have the information, but I refuse to release it to the public.

my main question which slipped my mind when writing this thread, can you do anything via ssh that you cant do with whm?

and clearly a plethora is far greater than a smorgasbord, but a cornucopia has the plethora going home in tears
