    I'm having trouble with this, I don't see why its necessary, what can it do that normal js cant?

    It can't do anything. It's just data formatted as a JavaScript object. It's meant to be a replacement for XML.

    JSON stands, as I'm sure you're aware, for JavaScript Object Notation. Notation is the key word there. It's nothing but a format for data that uses JavaScript's object syntax for the formatting.

    JSON has become quite prolific, with just about all programming languages providing classes and functions for jsonencode and jsondecode (encode and decode).

    PHP of course, but also Perl, C++, and even Squirrel (which is used by the Electric Imp and other embedded process controls):
