Need some guidance on a web app idea? Design from scratch or can it be done using CMS

    Hi,

I have done some basic web developments in the distant past mainly using HTML and some rudimentary CSS.

I have been thinking of a project like this:

    - A secured, HIPAA compliant web app where Individuals can store their medical work ups especially any imaging studies (CT scan, MRI, Ultrasound, Chest X-ray), Echocardiogram, EKGs, maybe even labs, also some medical reports - like say last cardiology note or oncology note. So this database would have to handle different types of objects, images, PDF etc.

    - Patients can upload imaging, EKG, labs etc themselves but ideally it would be done through the facility where they had those work up done.

    - This database can be accessed by hospitals and perhaps clinics too with proper registrations.

I have been thinking about an web app like that for a long time because a lot of time I get patients that are travelling from another state or even another country and they have done some work up weeks or months ago. It would be very beneficial to be able to access those for comparison and also to avoid excessive or repetitive work up.

Thank you. I appreciate any thoughts into this project. Would it be better to design from scratch by hiring a web designer or can this be done using a CMS like Drupal?

You could do this with a CMS like Drupal. I wouldn't recommend it, tho. CMS's like Drupal are designed for base common needs, and definitely do not meet the ultra high security requirements needed for HIPAA information. You would need to develop from the ground-up for something like this to be able to absolutely ensure your app has the proper security measures necessary to cover your butt. The liability of a system like that is very high, and you can't afford to leave that level of security to some open source pre-fab system.

Thank you for the reply. What would it take to develop a prototype to show the features, user-interface of such an app? Is it feasible to hire one designer to do the prototype? Then if I wanna move forward, I could hire a web design house. Please give me some ideas how I would proceed. I don't think I would have time to learn CSS, Javascript/Ajax to do a prototype.

Again, Thank you for your input.

You are correct to partner with someone that will put your idea into a working (non-secure) website, just for "proof of concept". You could hire someone and have them sign a non-disclosure agreement. What you're doing is going to be a big project, with a lot of database, User Interface (GUI) stuff.
