    With the dot in front of them, you are referring to file types. Example .txt is the basic text file, .exe is an executable file.

    If you're referring to what the files do, as in the meaning of them ...

    HTML = (Hyper Text Markup Language) ... what browsers use to render a web page on a person's screen. The scripting instructions per se.

    ASP ... and all ASP derivatives (Active Server Pages) is a development framework for building web pages. Pretty much a Microsoft deal.

    PHP ... Acronym is arguable depending on who you ask (Hypertext Preprocessor). A server-side language that runs on a server. This forum you are using right now is written using PHP. The scripts run on the server before it serves the packets to the user. That means PHP can actually output it's own HTML for the browsers to use. So this forum and most websites don't use "static" HTML. Instead it's dynamic, so the web pages can actually do some interaction between the user and the online server.

    So now I'm curious why you asked this here instead of using Google.
