    isolating object from a .jpg

I also posted this in Adobe Illustrator page but there were no viewers and the last post was months ago so I thought I would duplicate it here.

I'm not a adobe photoshop or illustrator user and don't have plans to become a professional level user. I do have access to an illustrator version, CS5.

I simply need to isolate some objects in a few .jpg pictures and eliminate the backgrounds. Rock, flower, tree, cloud(well defined) etc.

I took the pictures. They are pretty clear. 1-2 megabytes each.
Can someone walk me through how to isolate the object then change the background, around the objects, to a single color?

Please send me in the correct direction if this is not the place for this kind of inquiry.
