How do I make the word "NEW!" pop up next to post in Wordpress?

Hi everyone. I'm new to creating websites, but the one I made, scaredtometh.me is performing kind of well right now. I want to make it better piece by piece, and I am doing all the work myself. If you could, I would really appreciate some help. Could you simply answer a couple of questions of mine?

    1. I have tried to Google this phrase in the title of this post, but unfortunately I can't figure out the proper terminology to quickly find the answer to this question. I've moved my new post to become it's own menu item, but I want it to really stand out.

    2. Also, I am wondering how to make my header full-size (on a desktop) and why, when I view my site mobile, does a different image show up, than the image that is shown for the desktop?

    3. Next, can I simply switch themes right now? Or will I have to back-up my files (I know I need to do this anyway, I just don't know how to really) and then do it? I have basically broken down the Astra theme to create what I wanted, but didn't modify the code at all. I just used the "Customize" button under "Appearance".

    4. To keep going, I have tried to find an advertisement company that will work with me, both CPM and PPC, but none of them will for some reason. I have Chitika script put into my posts, but my domain isn't showing up in the "linked domains" list on their site. It was only supposed to take 1-2 hours for my site to show up as a linked domain, but that was 2 days ago. Nothing yet. Can you point me to an advertiser that will work with me with the type of content that I am displaying.

    5. Finally, what improvements would you suggest for my site to make it more powerful. The story is captivating, but my site looks like an 8 year old made it. Any help would be appreciated in all aspects.

Thank you for helping me in advance. I really appreciate it. I am trying to learn on the fly, and didn't really plan any of this. I had just had a thought, and rolled with it. Now I have my podcast in iTunes, Spreaker, Stitcher, TuneIn and SoundCloud. This is a start, and I am getting noticed, but what I am doing is really important, and needs to be done.

Hopefully I can get some help with this. I know you guys know what you are doing and I am eager and willing to learn.

    Best regards,

    -HeOrHimOrHis

I can answer #3 fairly easily.
Your theme is "responsive". In the CSS files, there are sections that look for different screen widths. When the widths are 'triggered", it executes the CSS commands within that screen width. So, your layout, menu bar, etc. change when you reduce the screen size to specific widths.

You can switch themes at any time, and switch back if you don't like it. Your content is stored on a database, so it remains there untouched as the themes change.

Find a good looking wordpress theme and install it ... see what it looks like. The content will be the same, but the look and layout will change.

Your content is powerful ... probably will be hard to find people willing to advertise on your site, if that's what you're seeking. You will get a lot of support from public services, people dealing with drug rehabilitation, etc. but they won't really pay you for anything.

Look into getting Google Analytics to see what your site performance is, visitors, etc. Then use Google Adsense to place some ads. If your website gets hundreds of visits per day, you could end-up making enough to pay for all of your webhosting fees.

I question the WARNINGS you have on your main page. In my opinion you don't need to make your site look like a porn site. What you are discussing is explicit, but it's about drug use and abuse. People knowing about your website and able to see it's about Meth addiction will expect it to be explicit. And, as you say, there is no reason a teenager should be shielded from your content. You could be saving lives. It's not pretty. It's not meant to be.

Thank you so much for responding to me. I really appreciate it. I am going to try switching themes here in a little bit. Maybe check and see which one is the best fit for me. I may even go with a "Paid" theme, if I can get a test of what my site will look and act like with a paid them.

As for my main image, I want it to be the full screen WIDTH when it is viewed on the desktop version. Does that mean I should use a higher pixel image, i.e., 1920x1080? The problem is, is that I think I tried this and the image wouldn't take. Does the image go into the CSS file? I was putting it into the header through "customize".

The content being powerful is the problem with advertising. And I don't want to use advertisers that will put inappropriate content on my site either. There has to be a company out there that will work with me. Keep you eyes peeled for me will you? I will probably have to settle with smaller payouts because of the risk, but having NO advertising is harming me. There has to be something out there for me.

I have Google Analytics in place now, so I will know my demographics well shortly. I have to figure out what Adsense needs from me, because every time I apply, I get denied. Just keep applying?

Finally, thank you for the warnings info. I will be taking them down as soon as I get back to the house. I appreciate your thoughts greatly. Much obliged.

Thank you again, and I will keep you informed so that you can continue to give me feedback.

Try some themes first and then deal with image later. Make the image very large, so it can be clear on a large desktop screen. Make another image smaller, as for a tablet, and a 3rd smaller yet, so it appears clear on a smartphone. Those three images are saved in your media library.

Here is the tricky part. To make those three images change based on screen size, you will need to edit the .css file(s) in your theme directory. If you ever upgrade the theme (through normal wordpress updates), your changes will be overwritten. So the correct way is to create "child themes" that are processed but not overwritten by updates. All of this a fairly advanced scripting. You will have to do quite a bit of learning to get into the heart of all these scripting processes.

So that's why I'm saying you try some other themes first, and those themes might address the top image, or logo. The issue may solve itself.

I didn't make the theme changes yet. I kind of like the way it looks. If I can just get that white space on the desktop version to be replaced by an image, I would be all the way in there.

I added Yoast for seo and PropellarAds to the site though as well as added the "Give" plugin to accept donations. I have also changed podcast hosts to Spreaker so as to easily upload to iTunes, SoundCloud, YouTube, Stitcher, TuneIn, and I'm working on getting into iHeart Radio. It also allows me to auto post to Twitter and Facebook when new episodes go live. On top of that, I have Hootsuite autoscheduling tweets, Facebook posts, and Google+ Posts that I write a week in advance. Finally, I am submitting the BOOK version of my podcast to some crowdfunding platforms. This is a lot of work for one man though. And I work a full time job, lol. Keeping everything organized is the hard part. But I am trying to get better.

Any thoughts on the "NEW" pop-up image next to new uploads? I feel like that little thing would make a world of difference.

I'm going to post this question on a couple of other sites as well. It is just a bummer that I don't know how to begin to phrase this question. I don't know the terminology.

Give us a link to your site so we can see it ...

Have you looked at any plugins for highlighting new posts?

I have not. Like I said, I didn't know how to phrase the question. I had tried so many different phrases and all that would pop up was "how to create a new post in Wordpress". It was getting aggravating.

oh sorry, I remember now that you posted the URL in your first post.

With your existing theme, it will be hard to flag "what is new" because you only show the chapters in the menu. Perhaps if you had a wp theme that showed excerpts of chapters on the main page, then you could flag the new chapter when it is posted.

Make your main, or first page about the "story" with excerpts from each chapter.

There must be a wp theme that pertains to "story telling"?

It wouldn't be hard to use WP_Query to grab the most recent post and add it as a link to the menu. You would have to leave that part of the menu as non-customizable, though.

This function: https://codex.wordpress.org/Function...t_recent_posts can be used to grab the latest posts, and you can set it to only pull the latest 1 using the numberposts option. Store that output into a variable, and you can output the permalink in the menu.

Of course, if you're new to all of this, it might be easier to just show the latest post on the main page. That should be doable through the WP reading options page.

I'm thinking of a wordpress theme like this:
Where Words Collide ? ?There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.? ?Ernest Hemingway

Something where all chapters are identified and read-able.
