multi server database effects on cgi scripts

Been a while since i posted on here (busy building a race car) so im getting back to it now. have a decent understanding of php scripting now. ok so i have hosted sites in the past where its just a shared server with one database, pretty straight forward. what im wondering is when creating a website with multiple servers (3 tier - n tier) does that setup have any effect on how a cgi script should be designed? especially scripts with sql code

    thanks in advance

I'm not sure what it means.

I don't know what a "tier" is pertaining to a server.

from the course im taking i learned teir refers to a server. 2 teir is client computer (1) second teir is the server that holds the application and database stuff. 3 teir is client node, application server and then a third database server. so if i have an n teir setup of say 6 app servers and 6 database servers does that have any effect on how the php and sql code should be written
