    photo publishing rights question

I have looked online for an answer, without success, re:

I am creating the website for my MIL who is a notable chef. There's a photo of her I really want to use from a recent article in Edible Boston publication. Who might have the rights to the photo? Does it depend on the publication or a contract?

It can be tough getting a straight answer from her initially, and I'd like to play around with putting an animation to the photo. Figured I'd ask online for now. Thanks for any direction.

This makes no sense at all. If she is really your MIL, why not make the photos and videos yourself and have original artwork without depending on someone else's work? Are you being honest with us or are you just too lazy for the job?

Agree on that great answer ...

Any photos you take are yours.

Even a nice smartphone with a good camera will take great photos.
She can even take her own photos and send them to you.
