Hi there, it seems to be adding either padding or margins where they have not been requested and forgetting about the background!

Progress 1:I should have defined the <ul> tag as having no margins or padding but still it is giving me and awkward left space and no background.

Progress 2: I now have a background colour by defining the background for both the <ul> the <Div> and the <li>'s . Still have that margin indenting it from the left and the background of the DIV is not showing.

Progress 3: The left margin is now fixed by getting rid of the width in pixels I had given the DIV. I now have just one unsightly gap at the right and left because I have added a margin to the right to push the slit over into the middle. I cannot get the div that holds the box to display a background.

Result: I finally managed to come up with a rather ugly solution source wise. I added a left padding to the first <li> and right padding to the last <li> to compensate for the background space!
It cannot be solved by applying padding to the <ul> because it seem to be halved for some reason so this is my solution. If anyone can find a better solution please do say.
