    You can use border-spacing on the table and padding on the td tags. Would pretty much work the same I'd say.

    You need to be careful with those, especially padding. They work but are not as easy as margin spacing. I prefer to use left and right margin spacing for keeping columns spaced apart.

    Note that for complete control, you also want to use border-collapse and set it to collapse. This makes the cells share borders, so that, say, settings that say 0px will actually result in 0px.

    See this post on a mailing list. Also notice the reply that mentions how border-spacing is NOT supported in IE (though IE7 might clear that up... fingers crossed).
