    I want to cause a link to open in a new window but the:
    [minicode]target="_blank"[/minicode]
    is not valid i know how i could do it in javascript eg:
    HTML Code:
    <a href="javascript:win = window.open('index.html','','')">THE_LINK</a>
    But i know no other method.

    The web standard says there is no difference in the <a> tags and their elements between HTML and XHTML. I'm not sure why your link isn't working, maybe you could show me the source code for what you're trying to do. This code is straight from w3schools. Maybe you can find a difference between yours and theirs.

    XHTML Transitional lets you open new windows with the target attribute, but Strict doesn't allow the target attribute at all.

    dont go the javascript way. Not all users will have javascript enabled.

    As fallout said, set your page to transitional XHTML.
