    Could anyone tell me what the advantages and disadvantages are to using layers in CSS? I want to have a

    background graphic and to display text over it, so do i just put somehting like

    .imgbackground
    {
    z-index = -1;
    }

    I have read that using layers is going out of "fashion" and that there are some cross-browser issues with it.

    Instead of using the z-index why don't you just put the image in the background?

    Code:
    .content {
      background: url(image.jpg) #000 no-repeat center;
    }
    Unless I'm totally missing the point here but from what you explained, this is how I'd go about doing it.
