Welcome curley_bhoy. Keywords would be a start, valid content, page hits by unique browsers, linking from higher ranked pages, etc. Have you submitted your site to search engines? Another way to gain traffic and rank is to post your link in forums. Such as you have done here. This can be a good and a bad thing. If you just go posting your link any and every where your rank is not real and can be picked up on. Since your site is about artists, then maybe posting your link in popular artist type forums would help. Just don't become a post whore. Exchanging links with similar sites also can increase traffic and linking. Most importantly it just takes time. Most search engines use web crawlers that take in your site and categorize it, but it doesn't happen overnight.

Make sure you use your keywords (ie: Artists or Titles) as headings... that helps alot.

    Keywords yes (especially into the
tags) but Google really rates who links to your site. Get your self a links page and start exchanging links with relevant sites (avoid link farms). And the text in the link is important, use keywords, not you web site name: e.g.

Glasgow new artists at the Glasgow Gallery

Also, have simple text nav links.

Other things you can do is create a robots.txt file to help the search bots index your site, and look into Google site maps (http://www.google.co.uk/webmasters/sitemaps).

And give it loads of time.
