First thing I do when I have to design a site is I go on Google and search other used car sites, see what they do and improve on it. Use you imagination, have fun and run wild!

As you are newbie, I would suggest research on existing car sites online. you will get an idea about how site designed for such concept. Creativity and Innovativeness are the important key skills for Web designing. I would suggest you should learn Photoshop. It is nice tool for designing. If you could not implement your ideas, creativity in your designing, you can get free templates online However I would not recommend it as your design should be unique so that targeted visitor get feel to visit it again and again. Another way is that you can outsource it to get very professional design within time duration provided you have a minimum budget.

Are you designing and developing the site, or is there someone else doing the back end? If it's just you, it sounds like you are going to need to learn about databases as well, since you will have quite a bit of information that should be organized as such. This will involve server-side scripting and other technical things.

I have an eye for detail like you'd never believe.
