    Hi guys,

    Well as some of you suggested months ago, I've been trying to learn to layout with CSS... It's actually getting a bit rewarding now as I start to figure a few things out but there's still plenty of questions!!!

    If anyone can take a look at what I'm working on at the moment and give me some help I'd REALLY REALLY appreciate it!!

    My main trouble (I think) is working with a drop-down menu system that I found on the web and I'm dying to use it because it's perfect for this design. It's layed out using a table so I'm trying to incorporate that...

    Click here for a picture of what i'm trying to get this page to look like and here to see how far I've got. You can download the stylesheet from here.

    Here's what I need to know:

    1. I'm trying to push the table down so it looks better lined up with the logo but when I tell it to be further from the top, it doesn't seem to move. Any ideas on why?

    2. As you can see, I've inserted some blank space into the middle of the menu so that the logo doesn't cover any of the menu items. I can't seem to get the same 1px black border on this section.

    I assume this is because the border on the other parts is a layer/div border? Will I have to somehow put a div in there so as to create the same border effect?

    3. I'd really like to keep the header and footer visible at all times, even if there's lots of content to scroll through. I found this: http://www.cssplay.co.uk/layouts/basics2.html#Top but when I tried to implement this on my page, it all went haywire! Is this going to be a possibility?

    4. I guess other than that, have I completely stuffed this up!? I don't think I have but it's worth asking I guess!

    THANKS IN ADVANCE! I'm really loving using css layout rather than tables - it's soooo much more versatile. I just need to get past some obstacles I think!

    Cheers
    Neil

    Hi Neil,

    Try putting the image inside the blank <td> and making the whole <tr> [minicode]vertical-align: middle;[/minicode]?

    In reference to the fixed layout, what happened?

    I have an eye for detail like you'd never believe.

    Thanks for replying!

    I tried putting the image where you said and made the whole <tr> middle like you said... I also removed the top/bottom/width/height for that image from the stylesheet.

    Unfortunately, it stretched the whole cell out the the size of the image and left the rest of the table at the top!

    Have I done something wrong there?

    By "the fixed layout", do you mean point 3 in my post above? If so, the header and footer were overlapping the IE scrollbar on the right and nothing that I put in them would position itself where I asked it to! Hehe... Perhaps I was doing something wrong with the positioning but I really don't understand why the header/footer overlapped the IE scrollbar (didn't think that would be possible!)

    Thanks again
    Neil

    tables aren't my favorite, but you have what you have .... so ...

    try adding the blue line:

    .
    .
    .
    <div id="header">
    <img src="logo.gif" id="logo">
    <table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" id="menu1" class="ddm1">
    <tr><td height="50"></td></tr>
    <tr>
    <td>
    .
    .
    .

    You then need to fix the black borders that don't go around the
    two sections (left and right). But, it moves your menu down anyhow.

    EDIT ...

    Because your logo is too small to read anyhow, you should make it larger, place in
    the upper left corner and do something different with the menu ... maybe push it
    over just to the right of the larger logo, slightly overlapping. Your logo would be
    a <div> background image.

    I think it would be much easier to deal with than the logo in the middle.

    Thanks mlseim

    You've definitely given me something to consider there... I guess I had decided to start working on making the logo readable later and then forgotten about it. Now that I try, it's not possible. I'll come back when I know what I'm doing but thanks heaps for your help. I've learnt heaps anyway!

    Create a large logo that readable and give us a link to it.
    There's a lot of creative people here who might have some
    photoshop ideas or some nice graphics that could give
    you some good ideas.

    Neil ...

    I'm no graphics expert, but this is sort of the layout I was thinking of ...

    http://catpin.com/lalor/

    If you could find a graphic designer that could come up with a "killer" banner,
    that would be the best. I just threw together a CSS sheet with your CSS and
    another one mixed together. In the final deal, you would no longer have your
    <tables> and things would be cleaned up. I didn't have time to tweak things.

    I just wanted to give you some layout ideas that might work better than your original.
