    i keep seeing a reference to a .htaccess tool that creates one for you? what's up with that? where do i get it? also, if i want my .htaccess file to point to a specific html file once a username/password is entered, how do i?

    In the dropdown on the main page here, it's the bottom option. You can't have it point to a specific file, at least not in Apache 1.3.x that I know of, only a whole directory.

    okay, so how does the file know to be opened? or do i do something like this :

    www.whatever.com/show/this/site.html

    and put site.html in the protect directory?

    What?

    Any file that you put in the same directory as the .htaccess file (or any directory underneath that directory) will be protected, provided you go through the Generator properly.

    okay, having problems

    i got the login screen to pop up, but it won't except either user that i setup in it so far.

    Make sure you put the .htpasswd file in the proper directory.

    it's supposed to be in the same directory as the htaccess right? check your pms

    I'm not going to help via PMs because in the future others may find this thread useful.

    It should not necessarily be in the same directory as the .htaccess file. In fact you're asked in the Generator where to put the file.

    i slightly modified what the generator gave me. i want more than one user name and password combo.
