First off, I'm not sure if this is the right forum but anyway.
I want to provide some downloads on my site. Just basically a zip file with some templates including image files. I was wondering if there is some way of counting and displaying everytime someone downloads one of these files.

Your hosting will need server side technologies. You may have heard of ASP, PHP, JSP, CFM. They all could be used for this.

A simple way will be using a simple text file and saving the value in there, though if you are going to track multiple files this will get complex quickly.

Let us know if you have any of the above techonlogies.

You're going to have some choices to make:

If you just store your zipped files in a directory, and you give them
a link to download the file, you won't know if they actually download
    it or not.

You could do a thing with mime types that forces the file open/download
dialog box. Then use PHP to count a dialog box as one download.

You could use PHP and MySQL to actually store your zipped files. This would
provide the most control and keep the files safe, in that they are stored in your
database, not in a plain directory. This method I would most recommend, but
is more work to create. You might want to look for some free file download
systems using PHP/MySQL and customize it for your own use. And I also recommend
this method because it will have an admin section for you to upload/edit manage
and control files (which would be like an inventory system). That would keep track
of how many downloads. On top of that, you could add a membership system so
    only members could download.

Search in Google for "PHP file download systems".

Here's a list from "shareware" to "free" scripts. There's even one for
simple "Download Counter", just like you are looking for:
