    Normally when your mouse pointer is "hovering" over a link, IE will display the link's URL in the lower left-hand corner of the window.

    But I have a particular situation where I would like a message to be displayed instead of the URL.

    Heres my site: http://www.chrysalismusic.net/news.htm When hovering over the "audio" button, I would like the message "launch media player" to be displayed instead of "http://www.chrysalismusic.net/news.htm"

    Can this be done? I know I've seen other sites that do this.

    Thanks in advance for any help.

    Heres my coding:
    <html>
    <head>
    <title>The Latest Chrysalis News</title>

    <script>
    function ouvre() {window.open('http://www.chrysalismusic.net/mediaplayer.htm', 'popupwindow', 'toolbar=no, location=no, directories=no, status=no, menubar=no, scrollbars=no, resizable=no, copyhistory=no,width=435,height=250')}
    </script>

    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
    </head>
    <body background="images/blue_background.jpg">
    <div align="center"><img src="images/news.jpg" width="850" height="650" border="0" usemap="#Map">

    You could put a title in the link so that when you hover it will say the message in a little box where the mouse is...
    Code:
    <a href="#" title="text to display">link</a>

    I think the poster means changing the status bar text, which cannot be done using HTML alone.

    You can use JavaScript, but this does not work in firefox or IE7 (pretty sure it works in IE6). Also, I think you can setup firefox to allow status bar changing.

    HTML Code:
    <a href="http://www.link.co.uk" onmouseover="window.status='Status bar text here'; return true;">link</a>

    Hmmm. I tried adding: onmouseover="window.status='Launch Media Player; return true;" to the code, but nothing happened. I'm using a map, I don't now if that has anything to do with it.

    This is the link:
    <area shape="rect" coords="276,473,313,489" href="news.htm" onclick='ouvre()' id='ici'>
    This is what I tried:
    <area shape="rect" coords="276,473,313,489" href="news.htm" onmouseover="window.status='Launch Media Player; return true;" onclick='ouvre()' id='ici'>

    Theory has it that that should work, but my experience with using window.status in the past has been a bit wavery. You also missed a closing ', which is probably the source of your problem:
    Code:
    	 	<area shape="rect" coords="276,473,313,489" href="news.htm" onmouseover="window.status='Launch Media Player'; return true;" onclick='ouvre()' id='ici'>

    Thanks for the reply Shadowfiend.

    Whenever I use that code you gave me, it displays the message "Launch Media Player" all the time, except when hovering over a link.

    See for your self: http://www.chrysalismusic.net/news.htm

    Is there anything else I can try?

    You'll want to do an [minicode]onmouseout="window.status = '';"[/minicode] :-)

    Code:
    function mouseText(stp)
    {
    window.defaultStatus = stp
    }
    that goes in the script tag
    HTML Code:
    <a href="some_place" onmouseover="mouseText('some_string');return true;" onmouseout="mouseText('');return true;">The link text</a>
    all links like that
