    I've always hand-coded pages, so I've never understood what those weird meta tags that programs like FrontPage automatically insert into the html. Like these:

    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Language" content="en-us">

    I can guess by looking at them what they basically say, but I'm not sure I see any need for them. Am I missing something important, or are these just extraneous tags that don't need to be there?

    Thanks.

    You don't need them, but they're good to have (they're both localization definitions).

    Interesting. What do the "content" values mean and how would I go about figuring out what to enter into my pages?

    Meta tags do wonders for search engine optimization, (ie for google)

    Try this:

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...e+optimization

    and here's a place to start with meta's:
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...-8&q=meta+tags

    Here are the Meta codes I use. I put them in the <head> just below the <title>. They work pretty well with search engines, as I have had great results. Just edit them to what you want, of course...

    <meta name="description"
    content="James Bond movie profiles, multimedia, statistics and trivia, theme lyrics, character information, and downloads..">
    <meta name="keywords" lang="en-US"
    content="james bond, 007, aim icons, aishwarya rai, bond 21, movies, james bond movies, sean connery, georgle lazenby, roger moore, timothy dalton, pierce brosnan">
    <meta name="allow-search" content="yes">
    <meta name="audience" content="all">
    <meta name="robots" content="all, index, follow">
    <meta name="revisit-after" content="3 days">
    <meta name="Rating" content="General">
    <meta name="Language" content="en">
    <meta name="copyright" content=" 2003 Tom Huffner">
    <meta http-equiv="reply-to" content="webmaster@bondmovies.com">
    <link rel="top" href="http://www.bondmovies.com/">
    <meta name="distribution" content="Global">
    <meta name="Classification" content="Movies">

    Eh. I don't really see how that would help you with search engines. I bet if you put it in it wouldn't hurt, but I am not sure what it does really...

    Ok. Thanks. I've been pretty satisfied with how all my sites have fared, so I'm not that concerned. Just curious.

    Thanks.
