    I spent a fair amount of time coding up this nice design of mine in php (so I could easily modify it) and then made each page into a static html page. everything up until this point is great. The static html page looks identical to the original php page. I even put it in its own folder to be completely separate from the php, and it works flawlessly.
    As soon as I ftp it to my mom's free hosting service (provided by our isp), the design goes to ****. As far as I can tell, everything is the same as it is on my computer, yet I get this mysterious bugging out.
    how it looks on my computer:
    [img=http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/9477/pagegoodej3.th.png]

    how it looks on the host:
    [img=http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/9846/pagebadby6.th.png]

    URL: http://pages.sbcglobal.net/5johnsons/

    I am stumped. any insight whatsoever greatly appreciated

    Huh? Only difference I see is a different navigation bar color. Or did I miss something?

    Same here. I wouldn't quite call that "going to ****." I looked at your code last night, but it was rather late, and it was such a mess I just shook my head and went to bed. Cleaning your code up (organizing it so that it is easy to read) may help you see where the problem is. It could be something as easy as you didn't upload the background image for the nav strip, or the path may be wrong.

    As far as I can tell, you haven't set the background to transparent on the menu div.

    I have gone through and organized your code a bit. This will help troubleshooting future problems.

    Code:
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

    I do recommend creating your navigation with unordered lists, rather than how you have it now. It is more semantic.

    Another suggestion. You shouldn't post your home number on the internet, there are a lot of wackos out there. Also, you should format your e-mail address so that spam bots can't read it (ex. 5johnsons [at] sbcglobal [dot] net, or something similar).

    Yeah, I know it's a mess. It was generated by php code. The frustrating thing is that it's the exact same html and CSS on both ends. I run it from my machine, and it works. I run it from the host, it doesn't.

    Also, in the HTML for the contacts page, I put some of the characters of the email address into character codes so that bots that crawl the source will just see5j&amp;#111;hn&amp;#115;&amp;#111;n&amp;#115;@& amp;#115;bcgl&amp;#111;bal.net. I do see your point about the home number though.

    EDIT: I found the problem. in the css I linked to top.png but the filename is Top.png. For some reason, this worked for my computer, but on the host it didn't. Wierd. Thanks for your help!

    Must be difference on the server settings on case sensitivity. Btw, even generated code can be clean, y'know.

    Sorry to go off topic a bit, but does that work? I'd never thought of doing that before...

    It works sometimes and doesn't at others. AFAIK, at times the entities are still interpreted as their true ones. JS methods are also often bypassed. IMO, there's really no need to give random people your email, as you wouldn't give random people your phone number - instead, you'd give them something else like where you can be reached. Same for the net - just give 'em a contact form.

    And I absolutely hate waiting for the email programs to awaken after clicking a mailto: link.
