a way to style checkboxes w/ css in IE6 and earlier?
if not , how to style them for later browsers and exempt IE6 from seeing it?
could i do background:transparent and use that on the checkboxes to override?

Do note that that example doesn't actually style the checkbox, but hides it and uses a background on the label for it. By virtue of the way labels work, clicking on the label itself will toggle the checkbox, and then via Javascript the background of the label is also changed.

In terms of styling checkboxes themselves -- it depends on the browser, and the CSS specification itself says that allowing styling of form elements is optional. Safari, for example, will usually completely ignore whatever suggestions you have in terms of styling form elements.
