    You can specify a background image for inputs, something that most browsers support.

    Do you want an image background, or just a background color (example here)?

    If you just want to change the background color of the text field, then use this in your CSS:
    input, textarea { background-color: #******; }

    If you want to change the background color of the text field when someone clicks in it, then use this in your CSS:
    input:focus, textarea:focus { background-color: #*****; }

    -------------------------------
    I can't say for certain, as I have never tried it, but I would think that using an image would be as easy as doing this:
    input, textarea { background-image: url('PATHTOFILE'); }
    ... but don't hold me to that.
