I don't think that you will encounter someone here that would say that they prefer tables to a pure, beautifully coded CSS layout.

Just about everyone here (ie, professionals who socialize) will take CSS over tables. The only people who use tables either 1) don't know about CSS, 2) won't learn for some reason, or 3) is learning.
Note on code: If I give code, please note that it is simply sample code to demonstrate an effect. It is not meant to be used as-is; that is the programmer's job. I am not responsible to give you support or be held liable for anything that happens when using my code.

You know what CSS isn't good at?
    Displaying tabular data.

Ok, I'll be the contrarian here.

Even though I've mostly converted to CSS, I still use tables for some layout tasks.

CSS has limitations in columnar layout. For one thing, it's incapable of making 2 adjacent columns of equal height.

PS - I used 2 tables in this website: http://bittime.transio.com/_Lenovo/home.html

One table with a 10px cellspacing is used to elegantly create spacing between sections of the site (header, footer, left and right columns). Another table for the top menu, just because I got lazy.

CSS is the way to go. While there are times when CSS is harder than tables, there are very few times when it isn't cleaner, and I have yet to run into a layout that I actually haven't been able to achieve in CSS. Granted, I only have so much experience, but plenty of interesting ideas have come up for how to achieve various layout types succesfully.
