What I want to do is stretch a background to the left but not to the right. Is there anyway I can make a background stretch from the middle of the page to the left edge of the browser in CSS?

If not does anyone have any ideas on how I could achieve such an effect with another method?

Currently my design is centered on the page. Unfortunately I cannot host it on my web server as it is still very much a work in progress.

The design is 800px wide with margin:0 auto; used to center the page.

If you want it to just repeat in one direction you can use [minicode]background-repeat: repeat-x;[/minicode] (or repeat-y). The middle of the page is hard, though.
The best way I can think of to do that is to create a div that sits below all other divs and that is always positioned with left: 50% and width: 50%.

Or (and this is really hack) - if the page is static sized and not fluid, make a background tile in PS that is clear on the right and filled in on the left 50% - thereby giving the illusion of only a half bg. Very inflexible though.
