    Hey, I'm in the middle of writing a page and having trouble setting a content background color.
    And also having trouble making a navbar.

    Heres what I have now:

    And here's basically what I want to make it look like:

    wow ... that's really bad (as in way different)...

    Did you copy the HTML and CSS from another website?
    If so, give us the URL. You must have missed some code.

    no, I drew the image in flash yesterday, and I wrote the html and css today.

    What I'm wondering is how I would extend the main div's background all the way down to the footer.

    I had to play with the code, so I made an example:

    Like this?
    http://www.catpin.com/tims/

    I made changes like this:

    body,html {
    margin:0px auto;
    background : #000;
    width:800px;
    text-align:center;

    }
    #container {
    background : #d7d7d7;
    width : 800px;
    margin : 0 auto 0;
    }

    The body changes center your page with IE.

    Thanks. I guess what I was doing wrong was trying to make the 'content' div's background the 'main' div's color, instead of the 'container' div.

    Also, I'm trying to decide how I'm going to do the nav bar.
    Any advice on whether to do it like I did with this page, or to use eight different images, two for each button (one for link and visited, the other for mouse over) .

    Some might argue with me on this, but nobody cares about the
    fancy eye-candy with mouse-overs and images. People care about
    the content of your site and being able to get there quick and easy
    without thinking about it.

    Put your effort into the content and information you're providing.
    ... otherwise, nobody will be there to click on them.

    I'm doing this for a webpage design class in high school, so right now I'm just experimenting with different things. This is actually only the second page I've ever made.

    Heres what I ended up doing anyway.

    I think you're right about the paragraphs though, It might be hard to see.

    Also, the person I'm doing this for asked me to make it into a blog type thing, where he doesn't actually have to enter the html to update the page. I assume I would need to do and rss/ php type thing, which I have no experience with, but I'm not really sure.
    Does anybody have any suggestions for what to do with that?

    PHP and MySQL for the blog thing, although getting a CMS (content management system) would be good. an example would be drupal or joomla.
