    I have the following on my web page at the head section. Although the favicon functions properly all the time with firefox, with IE it seems to appear only sometimes....Please advise....
    <link rel="shortcut icon" href="pictures/favicon.ico">

    IE sucks ... period.

    That's the way it goes with IE.
    Nothing you can do about it.

    My aplogies if I am cutting in on your thread here but I stumbled across this and have a question related to the code....I noticed that the file path for your icon is "pictures/favicon.ico", if the location of the favicon is in the same folder as the web page do you still need the forward slash like so href="/favicon.ico" ??

    Try putting "favicon.ico" in your main root directory.
    Having it there, without even referencing it, should work.

    Look here at the "accessibility table":

    Will it only appear once hosted on a server? As it doesn't while I am previewing it in my browser from the files on my desktop or from the html editor I use (microsoft exression 3)

    I would guess when on the server.
    You might want to go to the URL of the favicon (offline) and
    see if your browser caches the .ico image. It might show up after that from then on.

    In any event, it's a favicon. I wouldn't spend this much time on it.

    I guess your right, but unfortunately I have an obssesion with detail and as I am just starting out learning it makes me think I am doing something wrong which then leads me to being frustrated and spending probably too much time trying to fix it lol

    I have run into that issue before, putting the favicon in the website root directory worked for me
