    Hi,
    Very new developer here.

My client, who is a doctor, wants an area on his site where patients can post questions and talk about issues.

Basically, he wants the same thing that this site has. A place where people can sign up and share info.

Can someone recommend a cheap forum software package that is not too difficult for a beginner to install? One that has a demo would be great.

    Much thanks in advance.

phpBB is better than cheap: it's free.

phpBB isn't bad, but for a well oiled machine with a lot of awesome functionality, I'd recommend paying for vBulletin (which this forum runs on) or Invision Power Board.

Make sure your doctor does some research about running an online forum.

You don't just throw it up there and sit back and relax. It's a full-time job
to moderate the content. There are companies that hire people to register
and post spam, ads, link-click crap, etc. No amount of captcha is going to
keep out the garbage. You need to have several moderators that continuously
monitor content and remove unwanted users and posts.

You'll notice how clean this forum (WDF) is. Several of us moderators remove
unwanted spamming posts almost every day. It's constant, and it's important to do.

Also make sure your doctor is prepared for the discussions. You have people from
all over the world ... different races, religions, beliefs, practices ... someone will
have to determine which content to keep, and which to remove. This is a very
touchy subject, and should be given a lot of thought. The field of medicine, and
the physical, mental health of people are topics totally different than discussions
about websites and programming. It could be an emotionally charged forum.

Good luck with this project, and make sure your forum moderators are properly selected.

A big part of this, especailly giving advice and counselling over the internet is the legal stuff. Make sure your doctor is aware of it all before he proceeds.
